O Brighton anunciou nessa quarta-feira (14) dois novos reforços para a temporada 2023/24. Após se classificar para a Europa League, o clube do sul da Inglaterra contratou o meia inglês James Milner e o jovem atacante brasileiro João Pedro, ex-Fluminense.
Milner chega após o fim de seu vínculo com o Liverpool. O meia de 37 anos atuou pelos Reds por 8 anos, após passagens por Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa e Manchester City. Ele assinou contrato por uma temporada.
João Pedro, centroavante brasileiro de 21 anos, foi contratado pelo Watford em janeiro de 2020, após passar pela base do Fluminense. O jovem atacante chega por 34 milhões de euros (cerca de R$ 188 milhões), como a contratação mais cara da história do Brighton. O acordo tinha sido fechado em 5 de maio, e o jogador assinou contrato até 2028.

Essa será a primeira vez na história que o Brighton vai disputar uma competição europeia. Sob o comando de Roberto De Zerbi, que figurou entre os melhores treinadores do campeonato, o time terminou em sexto lugar na Premier League, garantindo uma vaga na Europa League.

Milner sai do Liverpool após conquistar a Champions League, a Supercopa da UEFA, o Mundial da FIFA, a Premier League, a Carabao Cup, a FA Cup e uma Supercopa da Inglaterra. Além disso, o veterano é um dos jogadores que mais atuou na história da primeira divisão inglesa. Tendo começado sua carreira em 2002, no Leeds United, o meia chegou a 619 partidas de Premier League, ficando atrás apenas de Ryan Giggs (com 632 jogos) e Gareth Barry (com 652 jogos).
