Deborah James, britânica de 40 anos e apresentadora de um podcast na BBC — You, Me and the Big C (você, eu e o grande C) — onde ela aborda sobre a doença, foi diagnosticada com câncer de intestino em 2016. Mãe de dois filhos, Deborah criou um fundo para contribuir com pesquisas em medicina personalizada para pacientes com câncer e campanhas de conscientização sobre o câncer de intestino.
Batizado de Bowelbabe, o nome é em homenagem à sua conta no Instagram, a Fundação trabalhará em parceria com as instituições de caridade Cancer Research UK, Bowel Cancer UK e Royal Marsden. Além disso, o Royal Marsden (hospital especializado em câncer em Londres, onde Deborah recebe tratamento) tem como patrono o príncipe William.

O fundo Bowelbabe foi lançado na segunda-feira (9) depois que a apresentadora contou estar recebendo cuidados paliativos para seu câncer de intestino, na intensão de amenizar a sua dor no final da vida. Até o momento, foi arrecadado mais de 3 milhões de libras (mais de R$ 20 milhões) em doações, doze vezes maior do que sua meta oficial que era de 250 mil.

Em recente entrevista para BBC, Deborah tem conversa franca e diz se sentir “completamente amada” e acrescenta, “Isso me faz sentir que estamos todos juntos no final e todos queremos fazer a diferença.” Ela conta que se não fossem os tratamentos experimentais, teria morrido há 2 anos, seus planos é fazer com que pessoas tenham acesso à tratamentos. “Em última instância, o que eu quero é que nenhuma outra Deborah passe por isso”, disse ela.
Lançado na terça-feira (10), foi ao ar seu episódio final do podcast, Deborah James disse que seu fígado parou de funcionar nos últimos seis meses e os médicos aconselharam que mais tratamento seria “infrutífero” porque seu “corpo não aguenta mais”.

Em agradecimento ao Podcast, segundo ela, o programa lhe deu força e a fez perceber a influência que ela poderia ter “salvando outra vida ou fazendo alguém não se sentir sozinho”. Mas não deixa de ser honesta, “Sim, eu largaria meu câncer em um segundo apenas para ter uma vida normal novamente. Mas ser capaz de fazer isso [ajudar as pessoas] e sentir que você teve um impacto é uma das melhores sensações que se pode ter.”
E depois de expressar sua gratidão pela companhia ao longo dos anos ela encerra dando 2 conselhos: “Por favor, por favor, apenas aproveite a vida porque ela é preciosa demais.
