A torcida do São Paulo não esperava sofrer tanto para ver a classificação do seu time, mas ela veio ela veio de forma dramática. O Tricolor teve que sofrer com as cobranças de pênaltis para classificar para as quartas de final da Copa do Brasil depois de perder de 3×1 para o Sport no tempo normal no estádio do Morumbi, na capital paulista, nesta quinta-feira (01).
O São Paulo entrou na partida com a vantagem de dois gols de diferença no agregado pelo jogo da ida em Recife. A vantagem aumentou quando Michel Araújo fez 1×0, aos 27 minutos do primeiro tempo. Mas, antes do intervalo, a equipe Pernambucana conseguiu empatar com Alisson Cassiano.

No segundo tempo, o Sport veio para o tudo ou nada para buscar a classificação. E foi aos sete minutos, que Sabino desviou de cabeça após um cruzamento para a partida para o Leão. O São Paulo, até esta altura ainda conseguiria a classificação, então não poderia tomar o terceiro gol, o que estava difícil com a oressão do Sport. Até que, nos acréscimos, a equipe visitante teve o que estava buscando e, para desespero dos tricolores, Sabino, numa noite iluminada marcou seu segundo gol no jogo aos 49 da segunda etapa, levando a decisão aos pênaltis.

Nos pênaltis, Wellington Rato inaugurou a série com gol contra o goleiro Renan. O destaque no tempo normal, Sabino, converteu seu gol também nas penalidades. Beraldo marcou logo após para o São Paulo. Luciano Juba desperdiçou para o Sport parando em Rafael e dando margem ao São Paulo com o gol feito pelo atacante Calleri. Alisson Caetano manteve o Leão vivo. Rafinha fez o quarto gol da equipe Paulista e Rafael Thyere manteve a esperança para a equipe da Ilha do Retiro passar de fase. E veio dos pés de Pablo Maia o fim do nervosismo do torcedor tricolor, convertendo a penalidade e colocando o São Paulo nas quartas de final da competição.
